Herd Health & Reproduction Intern, Mason Dixon Dairy Farm, Gettysburg, PA

May 8, 2017 - August 4, 2017

I was a herd health and reproduction summer intern at Mason Dixon Dairy Farm in summer 2017. I was responsible for heat detecting, breeding and ultrasounding cows for pregnancy and to evaluate ovarian and uterine status. I also evaluated and monitored animals in the sick herd as well as worked to determine a course of treatment including administering vaccines, hormones, other medications, drenching animals and assisting with DA and C-section surgeries. A large portion of this job was monitoring mastitis cows as well as developing a course of treatment. The farm worked with PCDart and had an extensive records system that I had a chance to work with.

Calf Manager & Breeding Assistant, UGA Teaching Dairy, Watkinsville, GA

March 2014 – May 2017

I worked at the UGA Teaching Dairy from Spring of my freshman year, until I graduated in Spring 2017. I started working as a milker in the farm's double 6 parabone parlor milking ~115 cows and assisted with other chores around the farm. I started working with the reproduction program at the farm by entering heats and breedings into PCDart as well as keeping track of the shots schedule, administering shots, and keeping up with the matework for animals on our OvSynch protocol. I later started feeding calves and became the Calf Barn Manager. With the calves, I developed the weaning and vaccination schedule as well as the treatment protocols for sick calves when necessary. I managed 15 student feeders, coordinated a work schedule and trained new hire feeders (and milkers) to on farm protocols. I also monitored close-up cows and calving dates, assisted with difficult calvings, processed all new calves and filed all information into PCDart as well as registered calves with the Holstein Association. I administered all medications as well as ordered and inventoried all calf supplies including feed, medications and equipment. After interning with Alta Genetics, I became more involved with the repro program and bred and ultrasounded cows. I also coordinated and facilitated on farm research projects, classroom lectures and labs with university professors.

Reproductive Management Intern, Alta Genetics, Watertown, WI

May 9, 2016 - August 5, 2016

During my time with Alta Genetics, I was based in Kalamazoo, MI and was responsible for heat detecting and breeding cows on 3 large farms in the area. I also traveled to Ohio to check cows for pregnancy via ultrasound on other farms. Through Alta, I attended the full sales training program as well as their reproductive and genetics training program in Watertown, WI. I also had the opportunity to assist with Alta Showcase 2016 in Wisconsin by fitting cows, coordinating set up projects, and met/answered questions of over 300 dairy farmers from 31 countries about reproductive management, dairy management, and genetics. I was able to network with producers from around the world as well as industry professionals and university professors. For my final project, I analyzed a large, progressive dairy farm in MI and presented a SWOT analysis with opportunities for improvement to the owners.
